If there’s one thing we’re reminded of every Monday night, it’s this: let boys be active. Give them space to run, shout, tumble, compete, and suddenly you see their joy, their confidence, and their character come alive. What looks like chaos to an outsider is often the very environment where boys learn teamwork, resilience, and responsibility.

Last week, our Anchors and Juniors played a classic favourite: Stuck in the Mud. For 40 minutes straight, the hall was alive with running, shouting, tagging, and desperate cries of “Help me! Help me!” as boys tried to get their mates’ attention to be freed from the “mud”. It was chaotic, it was loud, it was hilarious—and we sent those boys home hot, sweaty, and wonderfully exhausted.

Active games are often the highlight of a BB night. And while they can feel wild at times, they’re also a beautiful reminder of how boys are wired: to move, explore, compete, and express themselves with their whole bodies.

A group of boys in navy blue uniforms run and play on a grassy area outside a brick building at dusk, while several adult leaders in white shirts and ties supervise nearby under the covered walkway. Let boys be active

Balancing Boundaries and Freedom

There’s a fine line between squashing their activeness and letting it run unchecked. At BB, we walk that line with intention. We teach the discipline of listening, sitting still, and standing on parade—not to suppress their spirit, but to shape it. These boundaries form their minds and spirits, teaching respect, focus, and self‑control.

At the same time, we make space for what they love most: running, playing, and learning through movement. Whether it’s a new game, a skill-building activity, or a moment of wild laughter, we celebrate their energy and channel it into growth.

Growing Through Challenge

As boys get older, their appetite for challenge grows too. That’s why we build team games, physical challenges, and outdoor activities into our weekly Company nights. Squads thrive on competition, teamwork, and shared achievement. Even the dads love jumping in—especially when it’s time for King of the Mat.

And this weekend, many of our boys will take that energy outdoors at BASE Camp. Over three years and three stages, they’ll learn:

  • Safety on hikes, bikes, and water
  • Independence, from managing their tent to organising their gear
  • Resilience, as they complete walking, cycling, and canoeing expeditions

Along the way, there will be devotions, spiritual input, and those deep, meaningful conversations that seem to happen best while walking a trail or paddling a river.

Anchored in Christ, Alive in Adventure

This is the heart of BBQLD—Anchored in Christ, Advancing His Kingdom, Living Sure in who we are, and Stedfast in our mission to raise boys into strong, faithful young men.

Let boys be active. Let them be boys. And let’s keep creating spaces where they can thrive—active, adventurous, and alive in Christ.
